Solar Panel cleaning

With the prospect of lowering energy bills  and even generating financial returns, solar panels are becoming a familiar sight across the UK as a source of renewable energy. Heightened awareness regarding the environmental benefits of solar energy is also helping to drive the business.

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels comprise of many smaller units called photovoltaic cells. As sunlight hits the photovoltaic cells (usually made from silicon) - the photo energy (light) is tranformed into voltaic enery (electrial current). By allowing photons, or particles of light, to knock electrons free from atoms a steady current of electricity is created.

Is it necessary to clean solar panels?

The more sunlight is impeded from reaching the silicon atoms in the panels the less energy they generate. This can happen when particulate matter from air pollution, construction projects, traffic, agriculture, pollen etc... accumulates on the panels. Bird dropping will also cause a dip in the efficiency of solar panels. The later is a particular problem when panels are located near to television ariels as birds frequent them. Therefore cleaning solar panels can help to maximize the energy they produce.

If the panels are only lightly soiled, cleaning will not significantly increase their energy production, although it usually results in some energy gains. However due to specific localized circumstances - such as being located near a main road, factory or agricultural field - or when panels are installed horizontally, cleaning them can as much as double their output (see the experiment conducted by google). Cleaning is recommended when the panels are heavily soiled with bird droppings.

How often should I clean my solar panels? On balance we would suggest your solar panels need only be cleaned once or twice a year, however in circumstances such as those mentioned above they may require more frequent cleaning.

What does it cost? Our prices start from just £10.
